Mutton Bustin: The Clovis Rodeo

By Steve Johnson

Every year, at the end of April, a little town in California becomes the center of one of the most exciting and entertaining events in the valley. The Clovis Rodeo. People from far and wide travel to the small city, located on the edge of a countryside known for family farms and packing houses.

This remarkable small town has made it their mission to put together a wonderful, fun event for family and friends to enjoy. The event is truly unique. After ninety-six years, they have the formula down to a science. Great people, awesome entertainment and a charming small town all combine to make this event a one-of-a-kind experience.

125,000 dollars of that money is given to local charities. Some of these include, Break the Barriers, Komen for the Cure, the local Police Activities League, and the Boy Scouts of America.

Citizens of all ages can participate in the parade, all competing for a twelve hundred dollar prize. Other events during the week include the Ranch. Here, true western diehards are welcome to try their hands at competing for prizes in competitions that include riding, roping, reigning, branding and performing cow work exercises.

125,000 dollars of the total 300,000 dollar prize purse is given to local charities. Some of these include local schools, the FFA, their local Police Activities League, Break the Barriers and the Boy Scouts of America.

An amusing sport to witness is Mutton Bustin. Five to seven year-olds ride on sheep. There is also a Jackpot Roping Competition, the crowning of the festivities' Queen and a dance, for those who are dying to bust out their cowhide jackets and leather boots. Whether young or old, there's something for everyone to enjoy at the rodeo grounds.

There's no doubt that everything about this event is special. It's fun. It's clean. It's a good time. But what makes it so different is the atmosphere that it projects. It radiates authenticity. Real cowboys and cowgirls come to perform and they don't disappoint.

Everyone should visit this event at least once in their lives. It's an experience that you'll never forget, and you'll be glad that you went. The hotel, downtown and the arena is close together and easy to access. The events are wonderful and the memories are even better.
