Traditions are great at Christmas because irrespective of how small or large, they go a great distance to building family proximity and a sense of belonging. Plus, they're brilliant fun and it gives you something 100% unique to look forward to! And may also be utilized by your kids to pass on to generations yet to come. We are constantly looking for new additions to our own customs that are fun and interesting that may add to our enjoyment of Christmas. And let's be honest they're more fun than Christmas shopping!
We don't have many currently but these are our favourites:
We decorate the tree together, the youngsters adore it and for them it really means the start of Christmas! O.K so when they head off to bed i redo it myself but thats just me - wonder how many more years I'm able to get away with it before they see?
On Christmas Eve we go on the Santa express (a local steam train decorated for christmas) it's a chance for the kids to see santa and get a gift, and we get a mini bottle of wine and mince pie too - so everybody is a winner!!
On Christmas Eve we like to eat out because let's be honest after all of the tough work in the run up to Christmas - and then we'll be making Christmas dinner - we could do with a break!
When we get home we watch the Snowman together, my husband and I definitly loved this film as a kid and so do our youngsters, then we leave cookies and milk out for Santa and a carrot for the reindeer before bed!
In our home have a custom of opening 2 presents on Christmas Eve, and those present are always the same" new pyjamas and a christmas book. The children always know what it is, but they love it anyway and always anticipate having their new stories read to them before bed.
Christmas day! Generally it involves an early start after an extremely late night of present wrapping. But I get so excited as the youngsters drag their stockings into my room. Then we all head downstairs to the kitchen to see if the food had gone - then they run into the lounge to see what santa has brought.
This years addition will just be to make the cookies for Santa rather than buy them but I am still trying to find new traditions. Our customs might be fairly straightforward but they work fine for us and always bringing the largest smiles to our children's faces.
