Bodrum, Turkey: Things you should see and do

By Curt Ennis

The Turkish port city of Bodrum is situated in the South West of the country, not the Aegean coast. It is a very important place for history and for culture, for it used to be known as Halicarnassus of Caria in ancient times and there you can find one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Mausoleum of Mausolus. Like most important places like this, many holiday makers choose Bodrum as their holiday destination each year, and this article is a short list of the kinds of things this place offers its visitors.

A place of great importance in this important city is the Underwater Museum and St Peter Castle. The Castle is one of the most preserved historical monuments in the world, and the museum is home to an incredible collection of all the spoils of the underwater excavations continually going on all year round. The collection is also continually being updated by countless academics the world across, and so it is continually changing and getting better. These places are open every day of the week apart from Mondays.

Every Tuesday and Friday near the bus station in Bodrum there is a market day which is bustling and exciting as any Turkish market you would expect. The Tuesday market is dedicated mainly to textiles, while the Friday is more about food, so go to whichever one interests you most and haggle your way to some great bargains. The food especially at Turkish markets is to die for.

Visiting Turkey without spending a day at a Turkish Baths is not an option. These places use techniques for relaxation and health passed down through centuries, the locals believing it gives your skin a youthful glow and helps you preserve a good tan.

Bodrum is also a popular haunt for those who like scuba diving. Don't worry though, you don't have to be an expert - although there are deep water dives to cater for those who are - for you can head to one of the many resorts which will offer lessons in shallower waters where the water is deliciously warm.
