Road Trip To Weddin Mountains

By Anton Maverick

While you are visiting the Lachlan Region, following and exploring the haunts of some well known Australian bushrangers, you really should point your Campervan Hire Australia automobile toward the Weddin Mountains Nationwide Park. As well as being a hideout for Ben Hall, his in-laws also once lived in the remote hills. It was not a Nationwide Park in those days, but when you see the area, you will understand why it's now.

From the flat below and if the weather is clear, Weddin Mountain can be seen from fifty kilometres away and it increases in size as you get closer. It's a scenic drive and you may drive round the base of the mountain, or if you're more vital, exploring by bike is also an option. The key spots to go to are Holy Camp, Ben Halls Camping Ground and Picnic Area and Ben Halls ' Cavern.

The park itself is a collection of cliffs and gullies which are quite lovely to see in their own right. It is not surprising at all, that Ben Hall would have chosen this remote and hard to reach idyll to spend the time between bushranging activities. He'd have found the area even more attractive as a hide-out, because anyone that didn't know the area intimately, could never have followed and found him.

At Ben Halls camping ground, you can camp for free and the barbecues are also free. This spot is located in the north-west of the Park. From the camping ground, you can walk up Basin Gully to Ben Halls Cave, where he often lived for weeks at a time with his companions.

Holy Camp is found in the north eastern area of the park and from there, you can walk up to Peregrine and Eualdrie lookouts. Alternatively, you can drive round the base of the mountain to Holy camp and then walk up. The area is sort of gorgeous and it is not difficult to imagine living and camping rough in Ben Halls Cave.
