North of Cairns in Far North Queensland, you can take one of the loveliest drives in the world, and head towards Port Douglas with Campervan Hire Australia. If you keep going north past the Port Douglas turnoff and head to Mossman, you will come to another turnoff which will take you up to Shannonvale Tropical Winery. You should plan to spend one or two hours (at least) tasting these gorgeous tropical wines.
As well as the winery, Shannonvale have their own orchard of tropical fruits, including some you could never have even heard of, such as mangosteens, jaboticaba and black sapote. The commercial grade wines range from dry wines to Ports and they're all the tropical variety, and solely for the extra-special touch, the fruits are all naturally raised.
The wines, while made from tropical fruits, aren't sweetly or sticky. There are 2 mango wines, a light dry and a medium sweet and there are no other fruits added. The pineapple wine is a medium sweet as is the passionfruit, that has been compared against a savingon blanc but with a passionfruit flavor. There's also a jaboticaba, which seems like a full red and finally, a ginger wine.
The ports are quite special and there are some engaging mixtures of flavours. Tropical ports can also be enjoyed chilled. The ports include an Orange Liqueur, Purple Mangosteen (creamy port), Kiffir Lime, Jaboticaba (Amazon Tree Grape), Grapfruit, Black Sapote, Vanilla, Chocolate and Ginger. These are unique ports and are actually quite fantastic. Chilling them first seems to further bring out the flavours.
A trip to Shannovale Tropical Winery is a must if you are fair dinkum visiting Far North Queensland and the visit will fit right in with the striking vistas you will enjoy on the drive up and back from Cairns. Be sure to take a bottle or 2 home with you to enjoy during the remainder of your vacation.
