The island of Ibiza lies just off the south coast of Spain, its mother country, in the Mediterranean Sea. One of the Balearic Islands, Ibiza is known as being an ideal holiday destination for a summer vacation, but most importantly, the island of Ibiza is world-famous for its clubbing scene.
It all started back in the 1960s, when the hippy culture was taking off and the un-conformist hippies were looking for new places to express their free-loving attitudes. Many ended up in the Spanish island of Ibiza (no doubt because of its remote location and year-round sun), and then in 1973 the first club opened up on the island.
Pacha was Ibiza's first club, and today is still home to the island's most popular dance floor. With Pacha branches all over the world, the name is now an international clubbing brand which has only helped enhance Ibiza's reputation as the world's most important clubbing destination. Every summer, Pacha puts on house, garage and dance sets from some of the leading DJs, including David Guetta, Basement Jaxx and Calvin Harris.
Over the following 2 decades, the island's clubbing scene grew and grew. Some notable additions include Space nightclub in 1989, Privilege (previously Ku) which has seen many changes since the 70s and is now the island's largest club, and Amnesia which although started as a nightclub in the 70s, really took off in 1996 when it became home to the island's biggest club night; Cream. It is also famous for its sunrise dance floor.
More recently, since 2005 Ibiza also started to host the Ibiza Rocks live music event, which promotes the more indie genre of music. This event has seen acts such as The Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, Florence and the Machine and Biffy Clyro take centre stage alongside dance and drum and bass veterans like The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim and Pendulum, and today the island has a much more diverse appeal whilst maintaining its 'clubbing capital of the world' title.
