Support The Made in America Principle

By Ann Johnson

Despite our country's problem with outsourcing, lots of things are still made in America. People see the loss of jobs, but what they don't realize is that there is plenty left. If we strengthen the companies that we have, they'll be able to create more new jobs and more new American products.

If you're shopping for the holidays, you'll want to know what your American made choices are. You'll have plenty of options, from furniture and tools to kitchenware and even coffee, believe it or not. Most of the time you won't have trouble bringing your motivation to help America to action. You can start by comparing the labels when you shop.

A lot of you don't know that there's a coffee that's made here in America. Down in Hawaii, they proudly produce the only official USA coffee in the world. Reknowned for it's incredible flavor, this coffee is known to delight across the globe and would be an excellent gift for the coffee fanatic in your life.

Many of you probably saw Diane Sawyer's special tv program where she outfitted a new home with American goods. These American made supplies are becoming easier to find. A lot of them are cheaper than their foreign competition. Even if they aren't, it's worth the extra money to buy a quality "Made in the USA" stamped product that will last. Don't be afraid to hold yourself to high standards.

Don't hesitate to show off your new American purchases. Besides impressing your friends, you'll also get to encourage them to buy American made goods themselves. This idea becomes much more powerful when it begins to spread. Remind people to look for the American choice and let them know which brands to watch out for in the stores. It's all part of doing what you can to help.

The unemployment rate should convince you of the need to support American jobs if I can't do it. We need more manufacturing here, so more factory workers can be hired and more families here in America can be taken care of. When people start to care about American products, this difference will be made and it will help all of us.
