Every football team may or may not have a mascot as their representation.Today, one of the famous and controversial mascot in the history of football is âROWDYâ the cowboy, representing one of the famous football teams, the Dallas Cowboys.Rowdy is played by Ted Ovletrea.
For years and years, the Dallas Cowboys in their NFL jackets have an official mascot known as Crazy Ray Jones before Rowdy the cowboy.From 1962 until his death in 2007, it was Crazy Ray that represented the team.A memorial service in honor of his timely death was held by the Dallas Cowboys organization.
Since 1996, Rowdy became the official mascot of the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys up to today.His tenure overlapped with Crazy Ray's Pro Football Hall of Famer .Rowdy the cowboy participated many activities of the Dallas Cowboys, such as, in the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure, The Salvation Army, The Rise School of Dallas, Special Olympics, retirement centers, hospitals, schools, birthday parties, grand openings, Minor League Baseball games around the country, conventions, sports jackets parades, grocery store promotions, NBA games, weddings and sometimes takes a visit to the crowd during halftime.
As the Ambassador of the Dallas Cowboys, his job includes, but is not limited to creating game day enthusiasm at Texas Stadium by driving in on his four wheeler, tossing Dallas Cowboys jackets into the stands, using signs like Let's Go Cowboys, and mocking the opponents.Rowdy participates in selected away games and in every home game.
Rowdy is proud to represent the Dallas Cowboys each year in selected cities for the annual Mascot convention.In this convention, the National Football League Mascots compare and share ideas to help continue mascot antics and ways to market mascot awareness.Last year it was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where ESPN did a documentary of the mascots that will be featured on ESPN's Under The Helmet.
However, just recently, Ted Ovletrea who played the character, was notified that the team was letting him go .The character of Rowdy is still part of the team, but according to the Cowboys spokesman Brett Daniels, the officials need to evaluate his role on game days.Thus, in 2009 to 2010 season, Rowdy was not seen on game days.
