Rules Of Playing Online Blackjack

By Joe Calla

When playing online blackjack, your one and only goal would be to beat the dealer hand and get a hand total as near as possible to 21. But, take care that you don't cross the total of 21 because then you would lose your bet. When it comes to calculating the hand value, the rules of the game are unique. But, any player would find the rules to be easy to learn, whether playing online or in a land-based casino.

An Ace in blackjack can have a value of 1 or 11 according to the player's choice. The number cards from 2 to 9 have their face value, while all the Face cards and 10 are valued 10. This means that King, Jack and Queen would have a value of 10. So, when it comes to calculating the hand total it is simply adding up the total of the cards that you have in your hand.

Blackjack has simple rules that can be learnt by any new player. 2 cards each are dealt by the dealer to all the players and even to the dealer himself. The game sets off from here and every player is allowed to take steps on his turn. If you are playing the classic version of online blackjack, you would find that the dealer has to act according to a set of firm rules that cannot be modified. The various steps taken by different players are Surrender, Split, Hit, Stand, Insurance and Double. You would be allowed to Surrender right after the cards are dealt and not after that. This step is taken by a player when he finds that he has non-favorable hands. In this case, you would be giving away half of your wagered amount and stay out of the game.

If you want to 'Hit,' you would draw an extra card. And, if you want to 'Stand,' you would not choose to dawn an additional card. If the dealer has dealt you two same-value cards in online blackjack, you have the option to 'Split' your hand. In this case you would Split and create another hand and also place a new bet for the second hand.

The 'Double' bet is something like the 'Hit' bet, but in this case you would be placing another new bet equal to your initial bet. You would consider placing this bet if you think that the next card would favor your hand. But, this bet would allow you to draw only one more card.

Insurance is a highly popular step in online blackjack, but it is also the one that is recommended to be avoided as much as possible. When the dealer has an Ace, players are given the option to choose Insurance. This would give a player the chance to wager a maximum of half of his initial bet to counter the dealer's blackjack. And, when the dealer checks his cards and finds a blackjack, the player loses. However, the Insurance bet would pay the player with double odds to cover the player's initial bet. However, if the dealer has no blackjack, the player would lose both his initial and Insurance bet.
