An Introduction To Martial Arts

By Laura Gallagher

When searching for schools of martial arts Austin inhabitants have a number of choices. Schools for kick boxing, jiu-jitsu, karate and others are well-attended. The course of study may be focused on self-defense or offense. There are some of the schools that combine two or more of the disciplines. The ages that are accepted include children as young as four or five, to adults of retirement age.

Stars Bruce Lee was one of the first to bring this type of sport to the entertainment world. Historically, various forms of the disciplines have been noted for centuries. Other well known actors who have made a living with this type of action include Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. The best known of today's crop of action actors is Jackie Chan.

People decide to learn these techniques for many reasons. Usually, a desire to be able to protect oneself is a major reason. Many techniques taught help students to protect themselves in a dangerous situation.

Taking classes helps build poise or self-confidence. Some individuals appreciate the structured movement patterns much more than ballet moves. An individual who feels more graceful and comfortable in their own skin exudes an air of self confidence.

For those who love the thrill of competition, there are many different events available to students. Individuals are routinely tested to determine whether or not they have completed the requirements of a particular level. Students also compete against other students at the same level of skill and experience.

When choosing to begin training in martial arts Austin residents can choose from various types of sport. Participating in one of them enhances your ability to defend yourself against others. You also gain self confidence and poise through practice. Competition against set standards and against students of the same level sharpens your skills.
