Shin splints may be mild to severe and are described as being: inflammation and pain located on the inner part of your lower leg (tibia or shin bone) that occurs when the tissue that joins your muscles to the tibia becomes inflamed and irritated. A lot of these injuries are caused when one engages in extreme sports where you are using these parts of your body more strenuously than others.
There are high impact sports that give you the higher risk of shin splints as well as other major injuries: running, football, soccer, track and field, rugby or field hockey can really take its toll on your body. You can reduce the effects if you consistently have a proper dieting and exercise. Your bones will be made stronger and this will add more support for your ankles so you can stand on them all day.

Overworking the muscles or muscles that go in different directions unexpectedly can usually mean a lot of problems to your legs as well. You have two major muscle areas in your legs; hamstrings in the lower and quadriceps in your upper so you want to make sure that they are working well with each other. Some sports areas have hard surfaces that are played on and you need to be extra careful on these; some of the sports include: basketball, running or tennis
You need to allow healing time for any injury or it can keep recurring; some of these injuries can get so bad that you will never be the same again. This could make you favor the uninjured side, therefore causing that to eventually become as damaged as your injured leg. If it is very serious you may need to seek treatment.
