How To Obtain A CDL Allentown

By Amie Mckenzie

Getting a CDL Allentown requires applicants to take more steps than they would take, to obtain a regular driver's license. In addition to passing a DOT physical examination, drivers must be twenty-one years of age or older, before they participate in interstate commerce. To obtain the CDL, drivers must take a series of knowledge tests, along with a road driving test.

Certain vehicles require a licensed commercial operator. Any vehicle which has a placard, due to hazardous chemicals, must be handled by a licensed commercial driver. Also, vehicles carrying sixteen or more passengers, or vehicles which can haul over 26,000 pounds, should also have a licensed commercial operator

To earn the CDL, applicants must pass a series of tests. Every applicant must pass the General Knowledge test, and must pass some of the other tests, depending on the vehicle he or she will operate. Other tests include Passenger Transport, Air Brakes, Tankers, Hazardous Materials, Combinations, Doubles/Triples, and School Bus.

After General Knowledge, drivers must pass a three-part road test. Pre-Trip Inspection requires the driver to perform a thorough vehicle inspection, in the presence of an examiner, to ensure that a commercial vehicle is safe to operate. The next part, Basic Vehicle Control, involves turning the vehicle, in addition to moving forward and backward, with a defined course.

The third test component is On-Road Driving. Applicants will be required to drive in many different situations, following verbal directions given by their examiner. Situations may include left turns, right turns, single-lane roads, multi-lane roads, highways, streets, railroad crossings, intersections, curves, or grades.

Commercial operators must comply with certain regulations. If a commercial license is disqualified, canceled, revoked, or suspended, drivers must tell their employer, within twenty-four hours. Also, within one month, drivers must inform employers if they receive any traffic violations, in any vehicle. If drivers receive out-of-state violations, in any vehicle, then they must notify their state motor vehicle agency. No commercial operator may possess multiple CDLs, from any state.

Drivers who are eighteen years old, with a valid driver's license, may obtain an instruction permit, to learn to drive a commercial vehicle. During the learning period, drivers may not carry passengers, or engage in interstate commerce. Also, drivers must have a qualified commercial vehicle operator in the vehicle with them, at all times. After six months, learners will have the opportunity to start testing, to obtain their CDL Allentown. Read more about: cdl Allentown
