The Zorb - Go Downhill In A Big Sphere

By Zane King

There are hundreds of ways to go down a hill. Children may roll, adults may run, teens may bike. Whatever method is utilized, it's all about having fun on the way down.

Another creative, wacky way to reach the bottom of a hill is to ride in a giant inflatable ball called a Zorb. Zorbing (also called orbing, sphering, or globe-riding) was first started in New Zealand. Now it has made its way to several different countries and has attracted much attention.

You have two different flavors when it comes to zorbing. One way to ride in a zorb is to be strapped in. After getting inside of the ball, you will be strapped onto the inside wall of the inflatable ball so that while you are rolling down, you will be spinning round and round. 1-2 people can ride at a time like this.

A different way to taste the thrill of zorbing will get you quite wet. If the weather is hot, this way will be ideal as while you are inside of the ball rolling downhill, you will be splashing about in a pool of water. Up to three riders can go at a time this way.

There are a few different locations where you may zorb. Sometimes at a fair, or carnival, there may be an inflatable track that has a starting ramp. Other times you may be taken to an open, flat grass field where a group of ride operators will roll you around on. The most extreme way to ride is at an official zorbing location where you will be able to ride down a grass hill that may be up to a half a mile long.

And don't worry about the ride being too rough, because the pocket of air between you and the ground cushions the ride.
