Qualities Needed To Be An Oil Consultant

Many professionals sooner or later would want to be considered experts in their chosen fields of work or study. And it is not different for those whose occupations and careers are in the petroleum business. Sooner or later, an oil professional may opt to want to become an oil consultant.

It usually takes a firm decision to make it as an oil expert or if one wishes to become one. At the minimum, one should have at least four years of experience in his or her field to even qualify as one. However it is much advised that one become a consultant if there is at least ten years of progressive experience in a specific field to become effective and sought after.

The past two to three decades have seen oil disasters and oil spills of unprecedented magnitude and coverage. Thus those who have environmental safety and safety procedures experience will have an edge in the coming few years. Companies have now a higher demand for these kinds of experts than never before.

Once can choose two paths in becoming a consultant. One can freelance and do the job on his or her own or go with a recognized firm that does this sort of service of downstream and upstream oil players. Unless you have massive contacts, impeccable achievements and recognitions, it is usually not advisable that you strike out on your own. It may in fact be more lucrative and less headaches on your part to go with a recognized firm or agency.

Consultancy fees are usually paid by projects, and quite a few projects pay by the hour. Some projects can pay staring at 100 dollars per hour to over 500 dollars per hour. Thus if one has quite a few projects, one can make quite a hefty sum. On average one good project can earn one around US75,000 to US500,000 depending on the scope and coverage of the work.

A change in lifestyle can be very much expected if one were to follow this path of livelihood. You may be required to locate frequently to unknown and strange places and also put in extremely long hours. And depending on the project, one may not even be paid on a regular basis as it can be based on performance or milestone criteria before funds are released.

The job will take a lot of hard work and discipline. This is because a lot of stress will be involved in terms of accountability and short and fast deadlines. Thus one should be able to produce top notch work on short notice, while being able to handle stress and time constraints as well.
