Park Ji-Sung Staying with United

By Ben Williams

Manchester United have already lost one highly rated midfielder in Paul Scholes due to retirement and it looks like Park Ji-Sung wants to do the same, but not for a long time. The Korean midfielder, who joined United from PSV Eindhoven in 2005, looks more than happy to finish his playing career at Old Trafford and is showing no intentions that he wants to leave, despite recent speculation that United would be willing to let him go: "I want to stay here and I have no reason to leave."

Following Scholes' departure, now more than ever before United need to maintain as much strength as possible in midfield, with Scholes enjoying a stellar career with the Red Devils, making 676 appearances and hitting the back of the net 150 times. Without this influence, the remaining midfielders need to band together and work harder so the creative play-maker isn't badly missed.

United's plans, in light of this, will focus very much around Park, who has impressed many since arriving at Old Trafford despite some initial criticism at the logic of his signing. The scrappy Korean has been lauded for his non-stop work ethic which takes him all over the midfield and along the wings as a creative force to be reckoned with.

Sir Alex Ferguson has always seen Park as a big game player, putting in the performances when they are needed most, which is exactly what wins titles. He described his decision to leave Park out of the 2008 Champions League final as "the hardest decision I have ever had to make." Ever since then, he has proved his worth to Sir Alex, appearing in the two consequent Champions League finals against Barcelona to become the first Asian to play in a Champions League final.

Influential players including Vidic and Carrick have claimed that there is enough talent and experience within the Red Devils squad to fill Scholes' vacant boots and Park is certainly a major part of this for the next generation.
