Did you know that we have never participated in St. Patrick's Day the way the Americans do here in Ireland? We never had a parade or a festival until the American standard influenced us to do so. We are more likely to be wearing a suit and tie than a Irish drinking t-shirt, because Saint Patrick's Day is strictly a holy day for us Catholic Irish. We pay our respects to the good saint and then we go home. American Irish began having their parades and street festivals because they wanted equal rights. Do you think they had what happens these days in mind?
Lots of the older folks don't even know about what the Americans do each St. Patrick's Day. They don't know about colored beers or Irish party tee shirts. The elders only know about church on this holiday, because that's what Saint Patrick's Day is to them: a holy holiday. Saint days are observed by going to church, and it is very much a social obligation to attend mass services on these days. Some fellows might meet at the local pub for drinks, but there is nothing like the excesses of the Americans.
After spending your required time at church, then it's time to go home for a bit. Do you know what's waiting on you at home? Well, it's a huge and beautiful Irish meal cooked traditionally and in huge amounts so that the whole family can come by. I know you're thinking about corned beef right now, but you would be better suited to think about roasted vegetables and roast chicken instead. Don't you dare wear those crazy Irish tees to the table either, unless you want grandmother to slap it off your back!
If you are interested in some wholesome entertainment on Saint Patrick's Day with almost zero risk of getting thrown up on by a twenty year old wearing an Irish drinking t-shirt, then you should come attend some of the events our largest cities have planned! Cork and Dublin have many festivities planned that include all manner of activities, including lots of things for the kids to do.
I really don't know what it's like celebrating Saint Patrick's Day in America. I can only tell you what I've read about and seen on the telly.
