Getting Acquainted With The Great Coyote Hunting NC Has To Offer

By Ted Forkie

The excellent coyote hunting NC offers is a fascinating sport, enjoyed by many. While there has been some criticism from the Chapel Hill crowd, this is a public service. Coyotes were imported to North Carolina and are not one of the native species in this State, and are doing a lot of harm.

Just like other dogs, coyotes have excellent sight, hearing and smell to alert them to prey or warn of danger. This makes it very difficult to surprise them, as their senses are even keener than those of domestic dogs. Any coyote hunting tips must take this into account if they are to succeed.

Night hunting using spotlights has the drawback that it is hard to be sure of the species being targeted. Other options are to wait on their trails or den sights or to lure them to the gun. While ambush tactics may sometimes work depending on the terrain, they require a lot of time waiting without moving and are not popular. This is therefore not the preferred method.

Calling them within range using distress calls of prey animals is popular because it is effective. For this to work, the calls of local prey animals should be used, and this should be in as natural a manner as possible. Remember to start softly at first, slowly increasing the loudness as needed.

You need to overcome the advantage coyotes have in hearing, smelling and seeing. By placing yourself downwind of the likely approach path you will negate smell. Camo clothing suitable to the locality and time of year help, while it is essential to keep quiet. Remember, any movement is likely to be noticed immediately and also can give rise to noises.

For those hunters new to North Carolina, it is important to note that the endangered red wolf shares the territory with the coyotes. So make absolutely sure of your identification before you pull the trigger. The red wolf is bigger than a coyote (slightly smaller than a gray wolf) with a distinctive tawny and black coloration. These colors are similar to some color variations of coyotes.

If you are unfamiliar with the coyote hunting NC has to offer, get yourself an experienced buddy to show you the ropes. Joining a predator hunting organization will also help you find suitable areas to hunt, as they receive requests for assistance with controlling these problem animals from ranchers. Be responsible and have fun, but remember: even a coyote deserves a clean kill.
