Outdoors Sports in Seattle

By Barbara Smurlo

The Emerald City has wonderful locations for those who enjoy outdoor sports. Doesn't matter the weather condition, Seattle residents will always try to take advantage of the city's perfect areas for an outdoor activity. The instant the sun appears and Mount Rainier comes on view in full glory, outside sporting venues are packed with residents making the maximum of the instant. Additionally, Seattle enjoys pleasing summers with low humidity, perfect weather for biking and hiking. Fans will wonder at the offerings of outside sports in Seattle.

Biking

Hoping to increase the number of bike riders in Seattle, the city has implamented the Department of Tranport Cycle Programs and Bike Smart to promote biking among its residents by the year of 2017. To increase biking in Seattle, the city maintains a bike trail system that's possibly one of the greatest in the country, including miles of dedicated bike trails like the Alki Trail, Burke-Gilman Trail, and Interurban Trail.

Mountain Biking

Mountain Riders have a lot to be very happy about in Seattle, since the town is situated between the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Olympic Mountains to the west across the Puget Sound. Cross country bike trails and parks are in plentiful supply and are accessible to riders of all talent levels. Amateurs trying trail biking in Seattle for the 1st time frequently cut their teeth at suburban Redmond polished trails, like the Redmond Dividing line and Redmond Puget Power Trails. Mountain riders who would prefer to polish their tricks on more difficult terrain will want to visit nearby by Sammamish's dedicated trail bike park, Duthie Hill.

Hiking

Hiking trails in Seattle range all of the way from relaxed trail walks, such as the Green Lake and Carkeek Park trails found in cities parks, to reasonably challenging walks, like suburban trails at Mount Si, Little Si and Tiger Mountain. All of the previously mentioned trails are inside an hour's commute of downtown Seattle, for easy access and day hiking. All of the hiking trails in Seattle use the natural terrain, which rewards hikers who are ready to take on a challenge with excellent vistas.

Skiing

Despite having a marine climate, mountain passes within a 2 hour drive of Seattle provide access to fantastic skiing, including Steven's Pass, which offers runs for all talent levels and multiple lifts, and The Summit at Snoqualmie Pass, which offers simple after-work access to night skiing, family-friendly runs at Summit West and challenging runs at Alpental.
