By Paula Barron

Rafting, more commonly referred to as tubing, is an enjoyable activity if the people doing it follow the regulations and rules put forth for safety purposes. Along the stream, there are four stops. The first and second of the stops are usually calm. The second stop may be as thrilling as the third and fourth stops.

Certain materials are needed for this activity, such as tubes and other supplies. People are allowed to bring a non-motorized apparatus, such as a kayak. However, people who ride the buses cannot bring an apparatus on the bus unless it is a vinyl or rubber floating device, such as a small tube or raft. The Salt River Tubing and Recreation facilities are located at point three. This is also where the buses will stop. People can load up their tubes and coolers on the bus and be taken to the first stop, if they are interested in doing the full, long trip down.

Those who need to use the restroom, rest or picnic, can find the designated areas at the second stop near the bridge. Restrooms are also at the last stop. Many parking spots are available. Visitors may choose to park at the location where they want to begin, but it is suggested they park at the stop where they will get off. Free parking spots are at the recreation facility, but there is a fee for bus fare. There are fees for parking.

The river itself does not close. However, the roads surrounding it do. On days that are busy, such as Memorial Day weekend or the Fourth of July, the nearby road tends to get packed and authorities may close it. Be sure to get there early to avoid traffic and road closures.

Monday through Thursday is the ideal time for families to enjoy rafting. This is when there are very few crowds. A lot of people gather in large groups for parties here, which may include rowdiness, intoxication and profanity. For this reason, the area is not considered the most family friendly place on holidays or weekends

It is not common for people floating to get lost because the stream leads to the same area. People who find themselves off track or decide to wander are more likely to become lost. It is essential that visitors understand that people are capable of being hurt or killed while rafting. Drownings are known to happen. However, the most injuries involve people who have had too much alcohol to drink or are overexposed to the sun and heat. The summer temperatures can be unbearable. People must use sun protection and consume plenty of water.

Salt River Rafting AZ is a beloved activity for travelers and locals. It is particularly fun for family or holiday gatherings during the warm or hot summer months. Rules and regulations are in place and should be followed to ensure the safety of all those involved.
