The Importance Of The AR-15

By Francis Mosley

There are not many other assault rifles on the planet, except for perhaps the AK-47, that is as widely popular as the AR-15. This assault rifle has gained a prominence amongst gun owners in America above all others. When people are asked to imagine the modern assault rifle, it is this wonderful weapon that springs to mind. There are also few other rifles featured on pro-gun t-shirts as much as the wondrous, complicated Armalite.

The Armalite company were the original designers and distributors of the classic AR-15, which still bears the signature of the Armalite company to this day with the letters "AR". The Colt company knew a great weapon when they saw it, and bought the rights to the Armalite rifle design. It was not much longer before Colt gained a contract with the U.S. government to create an automatic version called the M-16. The AR is still in use today as a civilian model, only capable of semi-auto fire.

The only real black mark associated with the Armalite is its use by the Irish Republican Army for its terrorist actions against the British. Many atrocities were committed by these terrorists with Armalites in their hands and the rifle has grown to be associated directly with them, much as the AK-47 is associated with terrorism today. Luckily, the IRA is not as much of a menace as it has been in the past and its image has been cleaned somewhat by its local support and by the positive, pro-gun apparel it is featured on.

The support that the gun collectors of America have given the AR has been massive in the recent years. Not only have hunters started using the weapon seriously, but also sport shooters and collectors have attached themselves to this weapon as a community. Every serious gun owner has an AR-15 and will proudly support this rifle on their gun t-shirts and bumper stickers. It is a fearsome weapon, and its use for home defense is quite intimidating.

The legend of the AR-15 means that it will endure the elements unlike many rifles before it. Gun hating liberals and the fear of the negative stereotype have not caused sales of this fine weapon down. The government continues to contract with Colt for M-16s, which means it will continue to be featured on gun t-shirts and on television and movies for years to come. The Armalite assault rifle doesn't belong to Colt...it belongs to America.
