Downtown Revitalization Could Spark Old Memories

By Rob Sutter

I'm sure you had a playground that you frequented when you were a little. What about a statue that you would pass to and from school that simply resonates with you for some reason? You don't understand what the actual attraction is but the fact is that these very things stick with you and they often serve as a comfort. However, these very little things could wind up falling apart and downtown revitalization could be used to prevent this.

If I had to use one word to describe this very feeling, it would be "nostalgia." Regardless of whether those older than us saw something as good or bad back then, we enjoyed it because we were young enough to enjoy it for what it was. Take a video game that's considered kind of shoddy by an adult's standards. We will never see an appeal when it comes to this very title but someone who's far younger may play it and he or she may grow attached to it regardless of its actual level of quality.

If I had to count off the amount of times that I dragged my parents to a film they wanted no business seeing, I think I'd be here until next year. As a kid, I simply wanted to see the movie that my friends were absolutely raving about. My parents couldn't have been less interested in what they were seeing, though. It amazes me that I sat through "Batman & Robin," for instance because even now I feel like I have to apologize to my dad for taking me to see that disgrace.

When it comes to the locations that you remember back in grade school, those never seem to change and you don't want to see them fall apart. Companies such as Build a Better Burb utilize retrofitting techniques in order to bring life back to places which seem to be falling apart. Who's to say that downtown revitalization couldn't be used to help a playground that's been falling apart? A jungle gym might stand to be repaired so that kids today could enjoy the very playthings that you took advantage of in your youth.

Let's say that an elementary school you once attended as a child had started to fall apart due to natural forces taking effect? I understand that nothing remains perfect forever but these places should be fixed. With the right amount of revitalization, these buildings can be rebuilt so that they don't have to undergo total destruction. While memories themselves will last forever, monuments with value don't have to be sacrificed.
