During the course of the past 2.5 months, we have had eight leopards come into our Rehab Centre that is located in South Africa Hoedspruit. With the ever worsening issues involving problem animals lately, the 1st response is to shoot them on sight. Via the untiring efforts of one Brian Jones and his committed collection of staff and volunteers, the neighborhood folks have opened their arms to the idea of catch and release.
While there are nowhere close to sufficient numbers of farmers and agriculturalists involved in this effort, teaching people continues. This education effort has reached as far away as Middleburg, from which we have gotten no less than two leopards over the course of a couple of weeks.
To this point, two leopards have been let go on the game reserves, yet the remaining six are still in our possession. The group is struggling aggressively to relocate four additional leopards to Malawi, where four have already been sent at a great cost, yet you should not affix a price on liberation. We have got to go farther afield because of our lessening available release locations.
A resident cheetah babe, just five weeks of age, is in urgent need of an operation because of a defect in its little esophagus. This means that it has a great deal of difficulty in keeping down his milk.
Our three, newborn lionesses just experienced a health evaluation on the 21st of August. Thanks to the ever continuing loss of our ambassador cheetahs, Juba & Jolly, Brian made a judgment that, as the cubs were still sedated, we must get them tested for TB. The students were lucky enough to get an upfront look at our three cubs, which was necessary since required three teams for the three cubs. With their legs and arms moving quickly, the cubs all were on the receiving end of a clean bill of health. They were then weighed and are waiting to get their TB test results.
