30 Years of G-Shock

By Callum Moorhead

In 2013 the ultimate watch is turning 30!

In 2013 the world famous Casio watch series G-Shock turns 30, back in 1983 the original G-Shock or DW-5000C revolutionised watch design. At the time it was a given that watches where going to be fragile and would always be susceptible to breaking. Kikuo Ibe and his team at Casio blew these beliefs out of the water when they came up with the G-Shock, creating a new market for tough, hardcore watches.

It's now taken as a matter of course that if you buy a G-Shock it'll be almost impossible to break and will probably out live you! Kikuo Ibe and his team went through over 200 prototypes in the 2 year development period before launching the finished product the G-Shock DW-5000C in 1983.

In order to reach this momentous achievement Kikuo Ibe devised the 'Triple 10' development concept. In order to create the ultimate watch Kikuo and his team would have to make a watch that could successfully surpass 3 tests, have a 10 year lifespan, be water resistant to 10-bar and be capable of surviving drops of 10 meters.

Casio have announced plans for a yearlong celebration of this famous watch series, that has made people rethink what a watch is capable of and continues to push boundaries with each new model.

Leading up to 2013, the 30th anniversary of G-Shock, Casio has announced it will be releasing limited editions of 4 of its most popular watch models from the past 30 years. All 4 watches will be finished in red with special engraved case-backs by street artist Eric Haze, who teamed up with G-Shock for their 25th anniversary editions.

In addition to this G-Shock and Eric Haze have teamed up to produce a special commemorative watch that pays tribute to both G-Shock, Eric Haze and the close relationship the two have, going back 15 years. The watch a GA-110EH-8A will be finished in an iridescent grey with red highlight reminiscent of previous Haze-G-Shock partnerships. The case back will also be engraved with a 30th anniversary logo.

Over the next year G-Shock will be announcing more limited and special editions than ever before so if you're a big G-Shock fan keep an eye out.
