Wetsuit Jacket

By Dexter O'Neal

Wetsuit jacket is equivalent to wetsuit top. The main difference is the fact that wetsuit jacket typically includes a front zipper that lets you absolutely open the jacket while you're putting it on or off or if you're feeling hot. Some wetsuit tops are also known as wetsuit jackets even though they have no zipper but that is sort of misleading. This mainly takes place with surfing wetsuit tops which nearly never have a front zipper. Why? While lying down on your belly on your surfboard you'd be lying directly on the zipper which would not be very comfy. And due to the wax, the zipper would soon come to be dirty and hard to zip and unzip.

As you can see in the image beneath there's a woman's version of surfing wetsuit jacket which has only a shorter zipper below the neck. That sort of zipper will not bother you when surfing. An ordinary wetsuit jacket as we know it is in the image to the right.

The other difference is the fact that wetsuit jacket tends to be created out of thicker neoprene than wetsuit top and is therefor warmer. Zipper helps you get in to the wetsuit jacket even when it truly is thick. Pulling an extremely thick jacket with out a zipper above your head wouldn't work. Standard wetsuit jacket thickness is two millimeters while wetsuit top is typically from 0.5 - 1.5 (max) millimeters thick.

Wetsuit jacket is mainly utilised by divers. You could own a long john wetsuit as well as a wetsuit jacket and you could use them alone or combine them into a two piece wetsuit. This way you may cover quite a large range of water temperatures.

The normal temperature range for a wetsuit jacket is somewhere about 72F (22C) but in the event you combine it with a long john wetsuit you could go a lot lower.
