Be A Better Photographer With These Tips!

By Allison Maggie Sanchez

Photography has been gaining in popularity lately, but most people are uncertain if they can learn the proper techniques to produce good photos. The good news is that photography is certainly a skill that can be learned with a little study and a whole lot of practice. Here are some useful tips that you can add to your list of photography knowledge.

Try to frame every one of your shots. Not a physical frame around the shot, but a type of "natural" one. If you observe all the angles and lines in your shot, you can frame them in the camera to take advantage of them and create a "natural frame." This is a great way to practice composition.

Decide what the final use of your picture will be before you shoot it. For example, will the final photo be displayed horizontally or vertically? You can probably edit your photo either way once it has been downloaded, but sometimes, you can get a better result by using the right orientation in the first place.

When you are about to take a shot, make sure you are standing close enough to the subject. This will allow your subject to fill the frame. This is an effective technique when shooting flowers or still-life subjects. If you are unable to stand the correct distance from your subject, make use of your zoom lens.

You should review your photographs to ensure you are not underexposing or overexposing your shots. A general method to apply in these situations involves learning to interpret the histogram and adjusting your camera's settings based on those results. It allows you to see if a shot is overexposed or underexposed, so you can make adjustments for the next shot.

Sometimes, the available lighting just won't cooperate when you are trying to get a landscape shot. Other times, it can be impossible to find a good lighting location. How do you solve this dilemma? Use a photo editing software program to create the look you are trying to achieve.

Select your most unusual shots and the ones that present something old in a new way. Even though you can put thousands of photos on a memory card, try cutting down the number of photos in your albums to contain only your favorite pictures.

Set your camera for the type of picture you are taking. For instance, you will need to increase the shutter speed to catch an object in motion. If you use the right settings your pictures will look better.

Make sure you aren't using digital zoom instead of optical zoom in your close-up pictures. Cameras will usually let you zoom closer and closer optically until the digital zoom takes over. The problem is that this compromises the overall picture quality. Digital zoom tries to add pixels that aren't actually in the image, which makes the image look strange. Consult your camera's owner's manual to determine how to turn you camera's digital zoom mode.

It's clear that you can improve your photo taking skills more easily than you think. All you need to do is keep learning and practicing with consistency and dedication. When you start getting the results you want to see in your pictures, you'll know that the work was worth it.
