An enormous counter strike was dispatched by the Cylons against the Colonial Fleet as a result of the space war game strategy and destruction. This forced the Colonials to jump away to safety during which time they experienced a mechanical malfunction that caused a massive pulse of energy that in turn triggered an uncontrolled jump that threw them off course.
