I Didn't Know What Blister Packaging Was

By Aaron Vincett

Until just recently I had no idea what blister packaging even was. I assumed that blister packaging was some way of bandaging a blister. However, blister packaging is actually a form of packaging different pharmaceutical products.

So what makes blister packaging different from normal packaging, and more importantly, why do pharmaceutical companies use blister packaging? The main reason is that blister packaging is a better way to package is you want to better protect the product. Other packaging methods that people use to try to protect a product is that they will pack the product in with bubble wrap or packing peanuts. However, blister packaging is more compact and more effective. Anything made of plastic or pvc is better protected by blister packaging than any other packing method. Additionally, any pharmaceutical product is better protected by blister packaging than other forms of packaging. Where once people had to wonder what the best way to package this kind of thing, they now can know that blister packaging is going to be the best method.

So what is it about blister packaging that makes it so much better than using plastic bubble wrap or other packing methods? You may understand once you learn the process which is involved in blister packaging. It involves using plastic and/or aluminum materials to package a product, which helps protect that product from climate or atmospheric changes. It is sealed inside the plastic blister packaging, which keeps it safe from being scratched up or other damages which can occur to products while they are being delivered. The reason that pharmaceutical companies like to package their medicine using blister packaging is because when they use blister packaging instead of other methods, it prolongs the longevity of the pharmaceutical product, meaning that its expiration date isn't until later. Because blister packaging is so helpful for these reasons it is often used.

However, despite all its benefits, blister packaging is not something you can easily do at home, no matter how much you might want to protect your product. What makes blister packaging complicated? First off, the plastic that is used has to come from a specific mold. A certain kind of glue is also important in blister packaging to make sure the plastic sticks to the cardboard part of the packaging unit. If you are really interested in using blister packaging from home to send something, then you can order the plastic and adhesive online, but normally it is easier to just send your products packed in plastic bubble wrap.

Most commonly, blister packaging is done using special blister packaging machines. Companies often buy these specialized machines because blister packaging is so much more effective than other types of packaging. A blister packaging machine can work quickly, and can have the products ready to go in a short amount of time. Because the blister packaging machine encase the product in a sort of bubble of protection, it is easy to send many blister packed products all in one box. You run no risk of having the products hit each other and get damaged. The special bubble of blister like shape of the blister packaging makes it so that the products are all safe and will deliver where they need to in one piece.
