Variety Of St Augustine Inns Available

By Sarah Wilson

There are many St Augustine Inns situated in this venerable Florida town. Spanish conquistador, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, founded the city on Augustine of Hippo's feast day, on August 28, 1565. This region is the oldest port and city in the United States. It offers a plethora of historic sites.

Spain ceded Florida to the U. S. Government in 1819. It became an official territory of the United States in 1822. Its military government was headed by Andrew Jackson, who would later become a U. S. President. The territory was officially admitted to the union as a state in 1845.

The town is characterized by Spanish colonial structures and 19th century architecture. St. George Street is the city's historical anchor. Many of the buildings date back hundreds of years. While some buildings have been restored, others are the original structures.

A national Greek Orthodox shrine is located on Saint George Street. It's known as Avero House, as well as the Minorcan Chapel site. This monument and museum was dedicated to those initial emigrants from Greece who began arriving in 1768.

The national monument at Fort Matanzas encompasses 100 acres of barrier islands and salt marshes, as well as a Spanish fort dating to 1740. The fort was constructed from a regional shell-stone material known as coquina. The sides are 50 feet long, and it's guarded by a 30-foot tower.

The historic state park at Fort Mose commemorates the location of the first asylum for slaves. In 1693, the Spanish government began offering asylum to escaped British slaves. In return, the slaves converted to Catholicism, and served the crown for four years.

The country's oldest wooden school is located near the gate to the city, on St. George Street. The site dates to 1716. Red cedar and bald cypress, iron spikes and wooden pins were used in its construction.

St Augustine Inns are situated throughout this historic, beautiful town. Its many landmarks, relaxed lifestyle and lovely weather make it one of the region's most popular tourist destinations.
