Successful Arkansas Snow Goose Hunting

By Marsha Silva

The chances of having a successful Arkansas snow goose hunting experience are best beginning in February. The use of electronic calling devices as well as unplugged guns is also allowed at this time and until March. After this time, restrictions may apply. However, no matter what month a hunt occurs in, a very important element in its success is the hunting blind used.

Electronic recordings may be purchased that play geese sounds as they fly or feed. The best available versions are those that have minimal background noises of planes, cars, or wind. Because of this good clarity, they can be played quite loudly without distortion and reach several geese. The recordings of feeding are typically used in areas where geese are in fields or flying low. When migrating, during their higher flight, sounds of flying should be included among the sounds played.

In addition to playing the right sounds, the correct blind for a hunt is also important. Hunters each use their own style and technique. Therefore, finding the correct model is essential for success as well as personal comfort. The right model varies by individual, but luckily there are several variations available.

Fabric can be man-made or of a natural substance. Ultimately it is the hunting conditions that should determine whether a camouflaged patterned fabric is used or not. Fabrics that are man-made have some benefits, such as being more resistant to water, thinner, and less heavy. But, because of their lightness they can be damaged more easily and are more difficult to fix. In contrast, natural fabrics are repaired easily and more durable. However, they are heavier and will need to be dried thoroughly to prevent the growth of mold or mildew.

Roof types are made in different varieties as well. The most popular include the spring-loaded roof. These work well because they swing open at a fast rate and provide a three hundred sixty degree angle of uncompromised vision. Zipper closing roofs are an additional option, but are slower to open and could be somewhat obstructive. However, when a hunt is occurring over water or in areas that do not require wing shots, they work well.

Blinds may be placed in pits or above the ground. The correct choice depends upon the surrounding landscape. If a blind will not blend in well, pits are best. However, even in a pit a camouflaged covering is necessary. In cold and wet conditions pit blinds become uncomfortable, but they remain well hidden. The above ground versions should only be used in areas surrounded by natural vegetation or with trees present along the water.

Arkansas snow goose hunting is best done from February through March. During this time hunters can use electronic recordings of geese sounds and unplugged guns during a hunt. Blinds used are also key components and can determine if a hunt is successful or not.
