Overview Of The Notorious Suunto Core Survival Watch!

By Liroy Levice

The display is in reverse format, which means the background is in black, and the alpha numeric letters are in silver and white. Changing the contrast in the Suunto Core concealed menu will help, but of course, still not as clear as the typical black letter on bright background. No negligence of Suunto, but simply the way the style is.

The buttons are receptive and effortless to press. To get around through the menus, the "Mode" button and the "View" button have to be pressed in various combination to get what you want. It would appear complicated initially, but as soon as you understand the reasonable design, it is pretty easy to remember. Give yourself a few days to get used to it.

Positive: Very accurate ABC. I compare their readings using the actual ABC instruments. The precision is amazing and is better than the Casio Pathfinder in the dust! The storm alarms reacts to the air pressure change effectively as well. The digital compass is awesome. When you set the course, the bearing indicator would show an arrow and directional words (right and left), to guide you to the correct course, which is a great feature. User installable batteries which is excellent to save lots of money down the road.

Issues: The directional rotation ring is hard to move. For those who have finger nails, you should use them, if you bite your finger nails, good luck. The alarm is a bit gentle and difficult to hear sometimes. The same problem as the Pathfinder. I wish they can make it louder. The wrist strap looks cheap. The illuminator is a bit dim also.

Suggestions: This watch has earned a lot of poor reps because of bad quality control in its supplier plant in China. It's been a lot of complaints and reported problem. After a little bit of investigation, it seems that Suunto has finally fixed the hardware and software glitches. When you buy this watch, ensure the serial number starts from "918xxxxxx" onward. Mine is "944" and so far it's great. You should email the vendor, to make sure they give you the updated version as mentioned above, in that case your brand new watch will not likely spend most of its lifetime going back and forth in the shipping and delivery vans.
