What Should You Clear Away Before Moving?

By Sharonne Penickata

One thing that the average American household discovers when the time comes to move is precisely how much stuff they own. What's hiding in your house may surprise you. Movers are taught to judge just how much you own, and can provide moving quotes that assume every closet, nook and cranny is full of stuff.

While you are packing for your move, you'll likely come across several items that you did not remember your loved ones owned. Holiday decorations that have not been seen for ten years will emerge from the boxfull from dark corners, and collections of decade old magazines will emerge from the dusty drawers of disused pieces of furniture. You should have two choices in terms of packing these odd belongings: bring them, or leave them.

Your whole packing process needs to be considered a chance to pare upon some of your belongings. You will have stuff that you would like to keep, such as photo books of past vacations and your son's first drawing. But there'll likewise be items that you honestly have no idea the reason why you even own.

To make a good stab at eliminating those things you honestly have no need for anymore, consider five questions over every item prior to deciding to place it in the box. If you can answer yes to any of these questions, consider keeping the item. When the answers are no for those five, add it to the garage sale pile.

1) Have I used this item in the past half a year?

2) Is this a seasonal item, and one which I use each year?

3) Do I have an honest emotional memory connected to this item?

4) Is this item part of a larger collection which I plan to keep?

5) Has this item been made obsolete due to a newer, faster, or upgraded version that I already own?

The majority of items which American families haul around with them are those that serve no purpose, and will never be used again. Some families still stubbornly keep VHS tapes and VCRs, arguing that they may come in handy someday, despite having already replaced all your movies with DVDs. Other families will discover antiques and items which, while holding no value towards the family, could be easily valuable to a person else.

Evaluate your belongings while you pack them, and use this opportunity to narrow down your belongings to things that you actually need. Make a pile of items that you simply no more need, and determine what is trash, what needs to be recycled, along with what can be put in a yard sale. Make sure to discard any items which are honestly broken, as nobody will buy broken items. Two weeks prior to the moving companies arrive, hold a yard sale. Those things you don't sell needs to be donated to a local charity at the end of the day to help you avoid getting them included in your moving quotes.
