Become a South Florida Resident-Tourist

By Jony Mozen

South Florida is an oasis. If you look at Florida from space you will see that South Florida cities and towns hug the coastline while the land between Naples and Fort Lauderdale is mainly Everglades wilderness and swamp. The interior is an interesting place to see wildlife but you wouldn't want to live there. In sharp contrast, the coastal towns are in great demand. Great residential areas chant the same mantra as real estate brokers: Location. Location. Location. And why are these areas so popular? Wonderful climate, beautiful beaches, recreational opportunities, tax benefits, entertainment, less stress, outdoor fun for the whole family, great golf, superb colleges, excellent healthcare, fresh air, no hills to drive or climb up, and you don't have to shovel heat!

Why is Florida an oasis? Well, the dictionary defines it not only as a fertile area in a desert region, but as something serving as a refuge, relief, or pleasant change from what is usual, annoying and difficult. If the latter part sounds like where you are living now, perhaps you need to find an oasis of your own in Florida. Florida is noted for its oasis-like retirement and active adult communities that cater to the 55-plus crowd. South Florida especially caters to adults fifty-five and over by offering restaurant discounts on Earlybird dinners, discounts on movies and just about everything else. Living in the Palm Beaches, or on the Gold Coast, Treasure Coast, or Sun Coast is fun and relaxing. There are numerous well-appointed and well-maintained retirement communities, many of which are gated, with the most requested amenities, such as clubhouses with fitness centers, resort-style swimming pools, tennis courts, card rooms, plus planned activities for its residents, and a social director to keep you active.

Besides the great weather, the main interests of most new residents are comfortable living, activities and interesting attractions. Florida communities are unique in this respect with many located close to the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. There you can enjoy boating, scuba diving, world-class fishing, water skiing, snorkeling, windsailing, relaxing on the white sandy beaches and so much more. And no matter where you live there is always golf and tennis. Shopping at outlet centers, visiting animal habitats, sightseeing, museums, art galleries, and other cultural venues and enjoying the many state and national parks that dot the landscape can make any day an adventure. If you feel the urge to explore, you can easily visit the Florida Keys, the nearby Bahamas, and all of the Caribbean. There are many flights and plenty of cruise ships to take you there.

South Florida is truly an outdoor lover's paradise and everywhere you look there are ideal locations for anyone looking to enjoy fun in the sun. Southeast Florida, from Palm Beach County to Miami, has scores of golf courses, hundreds of public parks and thousands of miles of paths for biking, running or walking, and approximately 150 miles of coastline. You'll also find natural and cultural venues such as the Everglades and Biscayne National Parks, Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Miami Carnival, Coconut Grove Art Festival, Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, the Kravis Center as well as the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Ft. Lauderdale Historical Museum, Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Discovery and Science and so much more. South Florida is also home to the Miami City Ballet, Florida Philharmonic and the New World Symphony Orchestra, the Lowe Art Museum, Miami Art Museum and the more than 100 art galleries in Coral Gables and Miami Beach. And if you are concerned about your health, the Tri-County area of Miami/Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties is served by two dozen major hospitals. Southeast Florida is home to all major professional sports teams: NFL's Miami Dolphins, NBA's Miami Heat, baseball's Florida Marlins, hockey's Florida Panthers and the Miami SOL women's national basketball team. Major events include The Honda Classic, NASCAR and Indy racing at the Miami Homestead-Miami Speedway, and championship tennis. There is also greyhound and horse racing, plus jai-alai and incredible sport fishing. If you are from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, or anywhere in the Northeast you are sure to feel at home in Southeast Florida.

Southwest Florida, which includes Naples, Ft. Myers and Tampa also has an amazing number of golf courses, hundreds of public parks and thousands of miles of biking, running/walking paths and 160 miles of coastline. The Southwest Florida area offers an endless list of things to do, a wealth of entertainment opportunities and a climate that's ideal for any leisure lifestyle or outdoor activity - from the beaches to the golf courses to the Performing Arts Center. The Tampa Museum of Art, Museum of Science & Industry and USF's Contemporary Art Museum are among the favorites. Tampa is home to the NFL's Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Rays baseball, Lightning hockey, and Storm arena football. It is also home of the Florida State Fair and the annual Gasparilla Festival. The area is served by more than a dozen major hospitals. Southwest Florida attracts a lot of people from the Midwest and western states.

No matter which coast you choose you won't be disappointed with all that Florida has to offer you. If you crave activities all year round, Florida should be your new home. Wouldn't it be nice to go for a walk any day of the year - or jogging, or swimming, or playing tennis, or golf or whatever it is that you like to do outdoors? You'll find an amazing number of historical sites, museums, cultural venues, art galleries, parks and nature preserves, animal habitats, hiking trails, boating sites and more. Or if your favorite activity is hunting for a bargain in the discount outlet centers, you will discover more stores than you can handle. Of course, living in South Florida is like being on vacation all year long. If you feel the urge to explore, you can easily visit the Florida Keys, the nearby Bahamas, and all of the Caribbean. There are many flights and plenty of cruise ships to take you there. Yes, climate, dining and shopping, cultural attractions, golf, educational and business opportunities, and the beautiful beaches all add up to the fact that South Florida is a wonderful place to live, work, and play. Come and join the fun.
