What if your goal is to simply maintain shape and not to push yourself in a competitive manner? If this is your goal, then you don't exactly have to exert too much force unless you're the kind of competitor who likes to give him or herself a challenge. You can do such things as calmly moving upon a treadmill or jogging for a certain extent of time. If you can keep these up, I believe that you'll be able to keep in shape and perhaps become fitter in the process.

You want to be able to take part in the greatest amount of endurance training possible so that you may be able to get ready for the event. You may want to sprint long distances or perhaps you're more inclined to lift weights in order to build up strength. Each of these stand as a good detail needed in order to become better prepared.
