The Fundamentals Of Hand To Hand Combat Training

By Allyson Hellwig

Basic hand to hand combat training is a must for people to take up these days. Nowadays, it is extremely common to hear about people getting mugged, robbed, raped, beaten up, and harmed in general. Because of this, it is actually not very safe to walk around the streets anymore, especially at night. So in order for one to avoid harm, it is very crucial that he take a short course in fighting tactics like in a martial arts DVD or self defense DVDs.

There are many ways to learn the art of combat and self defense. One may go for official lessons in martial art schools. If this is too expensive, as said above, he may buy instructional videos and practice with a friend. However, before starting, it is important to first get an overview of this type of training.

When one starts his lesson, the first technique that he will probably learn is the punch. Every martial art has a different version of the punch but they all come from the same concept. The most basic way to punch would be to come from a fighting stance where the lead arm will be thrown. While it is being thrown, he will twist his entire body to create power and speed.

If there is a punch, there must also be a kick. However, in real life situations, one cannot use high kicks that he sees in movies. A more practical kick that he should practice would be the low kicks that hit the lower part of the body. For a power kick, use the hind leg to sweep off the legs.

Aside from learning how to attack, one must also learn how to defend. If an attacker makes a surprise attack, the defender will not be able to counter attack right away. The best way to defend would be to have a guard stance where the body is bent, the punching arm protecting the lower body, and the other one protecting the face.

Footwork is the essence of self defense because without it, one will not be able to dodge the hits of an attacker. So at home, one should practice moving from front to back and from right to left in a guard stance. If he keeps on repeating that, then his movements will become involuntary.

Basically, those are some of the basic hand to hand combat training techniques. If one would want to learn basic self defense, he can start by practicing these moves. So if he were to go to a class or buy a DVD, he would know what to expect.
