If you have chosen Peru as the destination for your summer vacation, you need to do some research to find out about the country and its people. The more information you have and the better prepared you are for travelling to Peru, and the easier your journey should be. You can relax and make the most of your opportunity to explore this fascinating country.

The climate is generally warm and sunny during the day, but it can become extremely cold at night. Although January to April is what is termed their rainy season, the heavy showers do not last very long. The rain certainly does not interfere with the fiestas that are an important part of the culture. They are an experience that every visitor should try at least once. During the months June to August, visitors have the opportunity to explore the highlands and the exceptional views.

The coast area provides access to a few clean and sandy beaches. These are very popular with residents and tourists during the months December into March. Although the climate remains warm throughout the remainder of the year, the coast and the beaches are generally shrouded in mist.

If you are travelling from one of the western countries, you may not required to have a visa before you can travel. However, it is always safer to check with the Peru Embassy in your home country before you travel. You will be issued with a 90 day visitor visa when you arrive at Lima Airport which receives the majority of international flights.

Peruvian banks provide ATM machines which accept most credit cards. Tourist can use travelers checks or US currency in the majority of shops and restaurants. Your own bank or travel agent can obtain Nuevo Sol, which is the currency for Peru, prior to your journey.

Peruvian shop are a dream, if you are looking for quality hand-made jewelry and other copper, silver and gold items. Visitors can find some really exceptionally well made textile products to take home. Shopping in the markets and on the streets allows tourists to try out their bartering skills as there is usually room for manoeuvre on the price. However, when it comes to restaurants and the normal shops, prices are fixed.

Peru is a large country with something for everyone. The easiest and quickest way to get around is to use internal flights. Public buses are the cheapest options for traveling any distance over the country and passengers will have to show their passports at police check-points on their trip. Local buses are great and reasonably cheap for getting around the towns and cities, but they are slow and very busy. If you want to travel using a taxi, agree a price before setting out and be prepared to haggle.

The diverse climate and terrain means that visitors should come prepared for all eventualities. A mixture of warm and light clothing, as well as appropriate footwear and sunscreen is essential. Visitors are also advised to ensure they have the necessary inoculations before travelling to Peru. Travelers should ensure that they carry sufficient supplies of personal medicine to last for the duration of their trip.
