The Bible's Account Of Jesus Genealogy

By Shanna McNeil

Jesus genealogy shows how Jesus finally made it to earth. Though he was conceived by a virgin, there was still a choice of tribe that should bring Him to earth. Old Testament prophets like Isaiah prophesied his coming while Matthew and Luke took time to write his genealogy. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, Tarmah, Perez, Hezron and Ran were among those who formed the line for Christ to be revealed on earth.

Abraham was known as Abram before God called him out of his father's house at the age of 75. His wife was Sarai and although they had been married for several years, they had no child. God's promise for a son later came to pass about 25 years later (at the age of 100), when his wife was 90 and people would have thought that it would be impossible. Abraham called his child Isaac.

The parents called him Isaac because Sarah laughed at the statement made by the angels that visited them in disguise. Isaac can be interpreted as "laughter". Isaac had two children, Esau and Jacob (his younger twin). Although Isaac would have loved to transfer his blessings to Esau, it appeared God wanted to fulfill his promise to Abraham through Jacob. Jacob got the blessings from his father in a cunning way and he delivered twelve children who became the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Judah was the fourth son of Jacob. It was from his tribe that the Lord Jesus came to earth. He suggested that Joseph (his brother) should be hidden in a pit after his brothers had already decided to kill him.

Judah had five sons but one of them died without an offspring. God decided to end his life because of his great wickedness. His diseased son's wife, Tarmah, slept with Judah (according to their custom) so that a name could be raised for Er, his late son. Tamar later gave birth to two children, Perez and Zerah. Perez was the first and the one the Lord chose to continue the link in Jesus genealogy.

King David came from the line of Perez. His parents named him Perez because he was the first from his mother. Perez is acknowledged in St Matthew's account of the genealogy of Christ.

Perez had two sons, Hezron and Hamul. Hezron was the younger brother. In Ruth 4:19, it is written that Hezron was the father of Ram and grandfather of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon and Nahshon was the father of Salmon. Salmon married Rahab (the harlot that saved the spies in Jericho) and they both delivered Boaz, the person that later got married to Ruth after her return to her husband's people. Boaz's son Obed was Jesse's father and Jesse begat David (the king that killed in ten thousands).

Joseph joined the descendants of David along the line. He got engaged to Mary who became pregnant by the help of the Holy Spirit. This means that although Jesus had a line of earthly parents, his birth was divine and supreme. Jesus genealogy shows that God can use any man to do his purpose as long as the person presents himself or herself for His use.
