Talking About A Hookah Bar

By John McCree

In the last decade hookahs have started gaining a great deal of recognition in the U.S. To explain in simple words a hookah bar is just like cocktail bar, but in a hookah bar you will get hookah in place of cocktails. There are a number of Hookah bars in urban areas in the U.S.

The History of Hookah and Hookah Bars

The source of hookah can be traced back to five centuries in what was then referred to as the Subcontinent. Making its way through Iran and into Turkey it experienced an increase of popularity among Turkish upper class and began to spread much more swiftly down through Lebanon and Syria and finally to Egypt, therefore, the hookah bar is heavily linked to the Middle East. These businesses became places where customers would socialize, drink coffee, and talk about politics and local events with a relaxing hookah session.

What Does A Hookah Bar Seem Like?

Bars that are designed to imitate the region of origin of hookah have generally Arab people operating them. The furnishings are according to the Middle Eastern culture of Indian culture. A few bars only offer hookah. But, at others coffee along with other drinks are offered. Typical neighborhood lounges normally do not have liquor licenses and therefore do not gain profit from alcohol. But the large bars which are positioned in very populated areas serve wine, beer and other cocktails. Some hookah bars try to give an atmosphere like a club with live bands and DJs although some tend to keep the bar close to the origin of hookah bars with belly dancers performing in the bars.

Near college campuses, hookah bars tend to be more casual with a wide mix of customers, which includes college students of course. The trend has become common as a safer replacement for other sorts of smoking. Hookah bars do well around colleges as college life is a time to try out new things and enjoy the freedom of life. The cities which are well-known for having many secondary education institutions in the U.S. have noticed a great boost in the popularity of hookah bars.

Let's Discuss a Hookah

Now that you know what a hookah bar is, you may be asking yourself about the device that has managed to spread throughout the world and spark a smoking revolution. Legend has it the hookah was first invented in 1588 by a Persian physician in the Indian court. The Indians referred to the device as a "huqqa", a name which has stayed with it through history, although it is referred to as many other names like "nargile," "shisha," and "hubble-bubble" to name a few.

Whilst the primitive hookah looked much different, possibly made of coconut shells, the end result has always been the same: purify and cool the smoke by passing it through water before inhalation. A simple hookah has the following four parts:

1. Bowl - to hold the tobacco.

2. Body - tobacco smoke reaches the water basin after passing through the body.

3. Water Basin - has the water to purify and cool the smoke. After purifying the smoke remains in a chamber over the water.

4. Hose - the smoker puffs on the hose to breathe in smoke from the holding chamber where it is stored after purification. Usually a hose is approximately one to two meters long.

The end result is a calming and fragrant smoke.

A senior patron of a well-known hookah business in turkey said:

"Company matters more than what you put in a pipe when you're smoking. It's a whole experience. All sorts of people, old, young and interesting come to bars such as this one. Hookahs bars will remain in the world as long as people want to take out time to enjoy the company of their good friends."
