Law Enforcement Can Benefit from Display Signs

By Jessi McCafferty

A paper published in 1995 and updated in 1998 by the most inquiring minds from several universities, research foundations and groups centered on how to change most people's road behaviorâ€"how to stop speeding and reckless driving, among other dangers, and make streets safer.

One focus on problem-solving centered around feedback. Though driver feedback signs weren't the total focus, feedback for drivers in differing ways was studied and discovered to be very effective. Law enforcement played a major role, by both pulling over violators and issuing cautions, and in a change of pace, pulling over folks who went along with the law and rewarding them.

While it's improbable you should expect road rewards for not ignoring the law anytime soon, the techniques they used simply illustrated how an engaged driverâ€"one receiving feedbackâ€"is a safer driver. That's where traffic calming devices come in.

The report does mention feedback signs in particular. A study was done with signs on two roads crammed with daily commuters that led into Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The quantity of drivers who went at least 10 km/h over the limit substantially decreased, according to the report. When they added in law enforcement to stop those speeding and offer warnings and information, as well as stops for those who complied to reward them on their good behavior, the share of speeders dropped rather more.

When law enforcement and the traffic slowing signs were used, the number of drivers speeding by 10 km/h dropped by nearly halfâ€"48%. And the amount of those going 20 km/h over posted limits dropped by a stunning 64%â€"almost two thirds.

The report did not focus just on traffic calming, but other violations like seatbelt using and drunk-driving, as well. Feedback was stressed for most issues. TraffiCalm's radar speed display signs offer the sort of feedback for drivers that has been proven effective time and time again.
