Some Of The Reasons For A Democratic Forum

By Kelsey Martin

There are a number of democratic forum discussions set up. Some of them are sponsored by other groups or interested parties and some have been fairly organic. These individuals meet to discuss things that are of interest to Democrats and their elected officials. Some of those major areas of concern are the environment, the poor and homeless, taxes, welfare and unemployment. They meet to make policy recommendations to the elected officials they serve.

Many of these forums work on the subject of taxes and increasing the tax revenues into the federal government. This economy has caused many receipts to slow as more and more people become unemployed or underemployed. The elected members of congress need more money to provide all of the things they are providing to those who need them. It is believed that tax rates for those in the upper level of earning circles need to be taxed more to provide some of this redistribution.

Unemployment rates are up, however, they are falling according to all of the reports coming out of the White House. The various forums do like the idea of this, however, there is more to be done. The general consensus is to increase spending on unemployment insurance so that more jobs can result. This is supported by Nancy Pelosi's statements to that effect.

Welfare or transfer payments are discussed in the light of being able to increase these to those people still in need of them. This allows these individuals to pay their basic bills and help provide further assistance to them such as free phones and other helps. That number is increasing even with all of the increases in these payments over the past several years. The failure of this system to decrease this number of people is not discussed.

The many defined poor and homeless people that still exist in the United States are also a subject of many heated discussions. These forums will identify many things that should be done for these unfortunate individuals. The building of places for them to live and extra money for them to maintain some semblance of life is discussed. There are very well thought out ideas about their rights to sleep in parks and be able to panhandle are treated as necessary evils to aid in the acceptance of these transient people.

The environment takes front stage in many of these discussions. Environmental degradation, Global Warming and carbon foot prints have been decided to be completed debates. The issues these working groups have before them is what needs to be done. The turning back of the industrial clock holds a lot of sway and, they say, rightly so. More money Is asked for to ensure the United States joins in with the United Nations to help this global effort.

These forums request and receive many different informational reports from an entire host of people and institutions. They get these from scientists, activists and the media. A very large part of the issues being talked about already have the decisions made about what should be done. The discussions have almost always been around how to implement the plans being discussed.

The reasons for a democratic forum is to make the policy recommendations they come up with. The differences between these ideas and those of the other side of the political aisle are brought up and published by the media. This is a political forum, run by political people and the decisions reached will be political decisions.
