Hasbro NStrike Hornet AS6 Modifications

By Jerry Benson

You like the fact that you have a Nerf Dart Tag Sharp Shot, but there is constantly something about this that causes you to desire additional power. Let's get real. For safety's sake, the Nerf Company actually intentionally limits the gun's firing range. Do you realize that if you have some endurance and needed tools, you are sure to make your guns achieve greater power and make big impressions on other persons?

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DOING A MOD?

You can achieve a couple of things, basically, by modding a gun. To start with, you should find your range greatly enhanced. Consider your own Nerf gun, to illustrate this point. How much distance does it get? You will probably say between 15 and 35 feet, which are not bad. But once you make the gun more powerful, can you envision your darts traveling two or three times that distance? It's definitely possible. In fact, there are real instances of guns modded to fire at distances greater than 100 ft.

The second of these reasons regards automatic-type firearms. With automatic guns, it takes just 7 or 8 seconds to empty 25 rounds of ammo. Can you imagine, then, the volume of those 25 rounds clearing the gun in only 3 seconds? In other words, you can fire 8 rounds a second into your target. You can't beat those numbers, can you?

If you would like to make some extra money you could sell modded guns on auction sites like eBay.

What are the steps to doing a gun mod?

Luckily, it's not that big of a hassle to mod a gun. In general, you can perform three kinds of enhancement on nearly all Nerf gun models. You can reinforce the spring to give it more strength, remove air restrictors or modding the barrel and replace this with a brass tube. The purpose of doing these three things is to make your shot more powerful so that any darts fired go farther. Another cool project is creating hand-made but fully functional darts or "Stefans".

Step 1: STRONGER SPRING: This will require that you unscrew the gun making sure that you do not lose the screws. After unscrewing the gun, you'll be looking at its inner workings. Within this chamber of the gun, there are also the spring mechanisms. You will find one, for instance, in the middle of a CS-6. One way to enhance your gun is by investing in some 20-lb. springs capable of supercharging your gun's firing power. The kick is going to cause your gun to have a lot more power, so if you do not want your gun to completely break, you might have to use some PVC pipe afterwards in order to add more reinforcement to your gun. All you need to do next is change out the screws and you're ready to go. Actually locating your gun's spring isn't too big of a challenge.

PART 2: ELIMINATE AIR RESTRICTORS Air restrictors are plastic parts that eliminate about 50 percent of the energy that goes into the shot. You will need a drill, a long bit and a Phillips head screwdriver. Unscrew all the screws on the gun and recall where they go. Once you remove the trigger on the CS-6, near the middle of the gun you will see a blocked space inside a tube that has the appearance of a turret. The opposite side has a needle about two-thirds of the way on the outside. To eliminate air restrictions, drill out the needle area. This will permit shots that will travel farther that you ever imagined would be possible. Keep in mind that the gun must be reassembled.

Step 3: Barrel Modding Method: You shouldn't run into problems with this part. Generally, these guns have barrels comprised of ordinary plastic, making them not quite airtight. You can take a 17/32 inch brass barrel that is the same exact size, and then replace it with a 17/32 inch brass tube; this allows a lot less friction, which then causes the barrel to travel a greater distance. Simply remove the factory gun barrel and switch it with one that matches the size but is made of copper or brass. This particular step takes just about ten minutes of your time.

Part 4: MAKE YOUR OWN 'STEFANS' INSTRUCTIONS Generally speaking, half-inch thick foam backer rod is the basis of Nerf ammo darts. Grab a bag containing 20 feet from a hardware store in your area, and guess what you've just purchased? You've got the 'building blocks' to make darts; they will require piercing though. Cut each dart to an accurate length, which will give you around 75 darts per bag. Utilize a hair dryer and pillowcase to cut and straighten them. Leave the blow dryer running a minute or two, give your pillowcase a good shake, then allow to get cool to the touch.

Then, carve some holes at the top and in the middle with a glue gun (but do not add the glue at this time), then put in a BB and cover the BB with the glue to fill up the area. You can expect to produce around 75 of these within a mere thirty minutes.

To get the most performance out of you gun or boost its value for resale, modding Nerf Guns and making your own darts is the thing to do.
