Bushcraft Survival Tips: Self-Defence

By Graeme Dinnen

In the event of a disaster there's no point having a great campsite and ample supplies if you can't protect them. This raises the often asked question of how many people should there be in an ideal group. That's as difficult as answering whether you should be located in a city or in the country. It all depends on individual circumstances.

To guard your supplies a sensible option is to divide them into approximately equal portions and bury them in four or five separate sites that you can easily access. Make sure you mark the spot so that only you know they are there. If you do have something stolen or taken, then all isn't lost.

There's an old Spanish proverb: "Civilization and anarchy are only seven meals apart." Ask what you'd do if your group is starving? Then be prepared to defend yourself against some other person doing precisely that to you.

What do you do if strangers invade your campsite carrying weapons? You'd have to weigh up the pros and cons in s split second and do whatever you can to safeguard your group. The last thing you want to handle is a knife or gunshot wound without having the emergency first aid kit any longer!

YOYO (You are On Your Own) You have to get ready for just about anything to happen, especially the unexpected.. Water, food, shelter and the resources to defend yourselves using the set of skills needed to get by without the luxuries of twenty first century living will make such a difference. Do you have neighbours on mind-bending drugs? Ever witnessed violent conduct when someone has run out of their medication? They act just like zombies. After ten days without any food people show a propensity for brutally taking any food and water supplies. After fifteen days it becomes downright cannibalism. Add these two together and the requirement for personal protection becomes critical.

Knowing basic self-defence will be essential. Ever punched anybody? Do you know how badly your wrist can be damaged if you strike someone incorrectly? The links I've put on my YouTube channel are there to show you how and where to hit a person. The key points of the human body. I'd strongly suggest that you enrol your family in a local self-defence class just for the experience of it. They are superb for body flexibility as well as increased stamina.

I first attended judo classes as an 8 year old, learning to fall with minimum impact to my elbows and knees or endangering my head. Then at 21, I joined the local Karate classes which I continued for several years. My instructor in Hong Kong told me that anybody with a good grounding in self-defense skills carries him/herself with a confidence that's subliminally broadcast to would be attackers.

When I was attacked at night by a sturdy gypsy several years ago, my years of training passed through my head in a split second. Instead of attempting to do anything fancy, I simply feigned weakness and took a step back every time he swung at my head. When I felt the time was right I ducked under his swinging fists and ran to my nearby vehicle, locking it from the inside as quickly as possible. Could I have broken his knee or sent him flying into a nearby hedge? Probably. But my instincts were for self-preservation. Gypsies, after all are likely to be more practiced at dirty fighting than I am so let's be honest - any impact to my testicles and its fight over and wallet gone!

There are hundreds of martial arts DVD's for sale. Most of them are just musclemen showing off their biceps and making an attempt to string a few instructional sentences together. Avoid these DVD's! I'd recommend that in conjunction with a local martial-arts class, you get the instructor's advice. MArtial arts training for women is equally important

This however is extremely useful: Pressure Points In The Martial-Arts Final Self Defence [DVD]

Remember you have little time and the odds will be stacked against you - that's why gangs attack in numbers. So you need to know the simplest way to strike quickly and where to strike efficiently.
