Trout fishing tips

By Martin Wilkins

One of the most popular outdoor pastimes today is Trout fishing. With a wide variety of species of Trout that have very different habits and habitats there are as many ways to fish for trout as there are species of Trout. With this wide a variety of Trout there is a good chance you can find a place to fish for Trout near you and be able to bring home fresh Trout for dinner.

Fly fishing is a very popular method of Trout fishing and is not as difficult to learn as many people have been lead to believe. Another myth of fly fishing is you can only use expensive specialized equipment to successfully catch fish with flies. Fortunately there are some very easy ways to use your standard fishing gear to use flies to catch not only Trout but many other species of fish.

The main reason for the special fly fishing equipment is based on the fact that most fly fishing requires casting a lure that has almost no weight and can not be used to carry the line a far enough distance to reach the fish. This is the reason traditional fly fishing uses the weight of the line itself to carry the lighter fly and leader out to the fish.

While using a fly rod may look difficult all it really takes is a little practice and soon you will be able to easily catch fish with a fly rod. The unique techniques used in fly fishing with this method really do add a special dimension to a fishing trip and is something I would recommend anyone who likes to Trout fish consider learning. If you just want to catch fish with flies then you really don't need to purchase any special equipment.

Standard spin cast or bait cast fishing equipment require added weight of some kind to be able to cast your line to the fish. As flies have no weight then using flies with standard equipment will require use of some kind of weight. A standard bobber works well for this as it will provide weight to cast and can be adjusted to allow variable lengths of line between the weight and the fly. Also bobbers do not cause the line to sink and will allow the fly to either float or stay closer to the surface.

Trout may also be caught with almost any other standard fishing equipment from lightweight spin cast equipment to heavier weight deep water trolling equipment. The type of equipment you choose to use will vary depending on where you fish and what kind of trout you are trying to catch. Everything from mountain brook fishing for Rainbow or other species of Trout to deep lake trolling for large lake Trout is an option when you want to fish for Trout.

No matter what kind of Trout you want to catch learning the local conditions will help you choose the right equipment and method of fishing. Taking a little time to research the local conditions can go a long way in helping make your next trout fishing trip successful.
