Advanced Information About Cigar Lighting

By Harrison Hyde

Cigar smokers often maintain a certain level of etiquette in order to earn respect from fellow smokers and to prevent embarrassing social situations. While there aren't many rules and regulations when it comes to smoking your favorite stogie, there are a few habits that you should develop that will assist you in preventing common blunders made by novice smokers.

Is there an etiquette for lighting cigars? There certainly is. It works both ways, too. In the first place, there is a rule which governs whether or not you should ask someone else for a light. In short, you shouldn't. You shouldn't voluntarily offer to light someone else's cigar for them, either. Instead, offer the use of your matches or lighter. That way, both of you can be avoiding the possibility of over puffing, which can make a cigar burn hotter than it's supposed to.

Obviously, you can't smoke a cigar until it's been lit. You do want it to be on fire, but you don't want it to be too hot. To get it on fire in the first place, though, sometimes requires a bit of finesse. For starters, one of the more important skills to learn is how to light a cigar with matches. First of all, you want to make sure you're using wooden matches, and not paper ones. The reason for this is that it burns long enough to get the cigar properly lit.

The proper technique involves a combination of gentle puffing and rotating your cigar. Also, you shouldn't hold the foot of your cigar directly in the flame. Rather, you should hold it a short distance from the flame, and gently puff on your cigar while you rotate it. This will give the entire foot of the cigar an opportunity to become evenly lit, which will in turn help to ensure that your cigar continues burning long enough for you to enjoy it.

Once your cigar is lit properly, there is one other thing you can do to increase your enjoyment of it even further. Every time you exhale, you should combine your exhalation with a gentle chewing motion. Experience has shown that this will increase the sensitivity of your pallet over time, thus increasing your appreciation for the wide variety of sophisticated flavors available in the world of fine cigars.
