Enjoying a Cigar Wherever You Go

By Kayla Kelly

Learning how to refill a lighter is usually not terribly difficult. In fact, the best butane lighters on the market are manufactured in a way that makes them very easy to understand. In the vast majority of cases, they'll have some characteristics in common that you can rely upon to determine the procedure. It's always best, however, to have your manufacturer's instructions handy the first time you refill it.

On the bottom of your lighter, you'll usually see two screws. The Phillips screw is usually the one that holds the entire letter together, so you obviously don't want to unscrew this. A standard screw is usually used to provide control over the flow of the gas through the lighter. Before you refill your lighter, turn this to the lowest position possible. You usually do this by tightening the screw; turn it clockwise.

Take a small screwdriver from your toolbox and use it to adjust the height of the flame on your lighter. You want to set the height to the smallest possible setting. You will turn the adjusting screw to the right to tighten up the gas valve to make sure that a minimial amount of fuel gets through. For the next step in the process, make sure to hold the lighter a safe distance away from clothing and from your face and head.

Take the screwdriver you used in one of the previous steps and use it to push the refilling valve on the butane lighter. This will allow the air that is trapped in the fuel tank to escape. If the air were to remain in the lighter, it would not be able to ignite and would malfunction as a result. This simple step helps prevent that very problem.

Flip the lighter upside down and then press the stem located on the refill can of fuel into the valve on the lighter. Leave the stem in the valve for around five seconds and then remove it. Once this is completed you will need to let your lighter sit for five minutes while the fuel reaches room temperature. Once it has reached room temperature, you can readjust the flame to your preference.
